#MoreBallGames Campaign Launched
More Ball Games: Reclaiming Public Spaces for Play
Across England, thousands of outdated and restrictive ‘No Ball Games’ signs continue to undermine children's fundamental right to play. Play England stands proudly behind the dynamic ‘More Ball Games’ campaign, a crucial initiative led by London Sport and creative agency Saatchi & Saatchi. Together, we're determined to challenge and remove these barriers, advocating fiercely for public spaces that welcome and encourage active play, vibrant communities, and healthier, happier childhoods.
A Simple Action, Powerful Impact
Play England firmly believes every child must have the freedom to play freely and safely outdoors. Yet, approximately 7,000 ‘No Ball Games’ signs scattered across London deliberately hinder children's opportunities to explore, build friendships, and experience joy through play. More than mere physical barriers, these signs represent a wider issue—communities discouraging play and effectively denying children their rights.
This campaign's intent is vividly illustrated through action: at Lambeth’s Mursell Estate, an oppressive ‘No Ball Games’ sign was boldly transformed into a fully functioning basketball hoop. This symbolic act captures the campaign’s spirit—converting oppressive restrictions into empowering invitations to play.
Confronting Play Inequality Head-On
We cannot ignore the stark reality: 58% of young Londoners currently fail to meet recommended physical activity levels, with children from disadvantaged communities disproportionately impacted. By removing just one restrictive sign, we can immediately create play opportunities for up to 80 children.
Play England stresses that play is not a privilege but a fundamental right, essential for children's physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. Outdated signs and dismissive attitudes towards play are unacceptable and must be urgently addressed. We owe it to every child to restore their rightful access to childhood through meaningful outdoor play.
Act Now for Lasting Change
Together with London Sport, London Play, Playing Out, Know Ball Games, and the Play Commission, we demand decisive action from government policymakers, local authorities, and housing associations:
Immediately remove all ‘No Ball Games’ signs.
Champion children’s right to play actively through supportive policies and inclusive community initiatives.
Transform public spaces into welcoming, accessible, and inclusive areas for diverse forms of play.
Tackle systemic barriers preventing children, particularly those in underserved communities, from accessing their right to play.
Eugene Minogue, Executive Director of Play England and founder of the Know Ball Games campaign (established in 2011), passionately underscores the urgency for immediate action: "Removing these signs is about more than physical barriers—it’s about reclaiming childhood itself. We cannot accept that outdated signs and societal attitudes continue to rob children of the play opportunities they deserve. We must act now, decisively and collectively, to ensure every child has the freedom to play, thrive, and reach their full potential, no matter their background or postcode."
